Florida rules explained for Collier County homeowners and drivers

Wind Mitigation Naples: Get Credit for Your Home

The short version

Wind mitigation in Naples counts only after a licensed inspector records your home's wind features on the state's uniform form. Florida requires companies to file credits for those features. Bring the report to one call, and we compare how access to 80+ insurance companies would quote the same house.

  • The whole city sits at a 170 mph design wind speed
  • Eligible owners can get a free state-funded wind inspection
  • Send the signed form itself, not a summary of it

Dial (239) 504-9998 and a licensed Florida agent starts your comparison on the spot.

Wind mitigation Naples homeowners can prove on paper tells an insurance company how the house would stand up to a hurricane, and in this InsuranceNaplesFL.com guide Matt Williams shows how that paper reaches your bill. Without it, a company may assume the least about your roof and windows and price the wind part of the bill that way. With it, the credits Florida makes companies file can apply to features you already paid for. A short inspection can turn work done years ago into something every quote has to account for.

Wind mitigation Naples homes can document, and what the form records

Florida law requires residential rate filings to include actuarially reasonable discounts, credits or other rate differences for windstorm mitigation features, and insurers have to describe them online (s. 627.0629(1), Fla. Stat.). A separate statute requires every insurer to tell you, when the policy is issued and at each renewal, which discounts, credits or deductible reductions are available and their range (s. 627.711, Fla. Stat.).

The evidence for those credits is the uniform mitigation verification inspection form, which all insurers use. A revised version took effect on April 1, 2026. It records the building code the house was built under, roof covering, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall attachment, secondary water resistance and opening protection, and the new version adds the region designation based on design wind speed, roof slope and FORTIFIED Home certificates (Citizens bulletin on the revised form).

Only an authorized inspector can sign it: a licensed home inspector with hurricane mitigation training, a certified building code inspector, a licensed general, building or residential contractor, a licensed engineer or architect, or someone the insurer recognizes as qualified. We do not inspect homes. Hire one of those professionals, then let us put the signed form to work.

Naples builds to 170 mph, and the form is how a quote sees it

The City of Naples wind-speed maps put the Risk Category II ultimate design wind speed at 170 mph uniformly across the city (City of Naples design wind speeds). Collier County's Chief Building Official sets the county minimum for the same category at 150 mph, reaching 170 mph in some regions (Collier County formal interpretation, February 2026). Those figures drive the structural and opening-protection requirements for new building work.

A house only gets credit for what is written down, though. Impact windows, rated shutters, a reroof with upgraded deck nailing or hurricane straps added during a remodel all mean nothing to an underwriter until the form records them. The new form's design-speed field gives a coastal address like yours a place to show where it sits.

Collier County's storm record is public. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation counted 112,957 claims in the county after Irma in 2017 (OIR catastrophe reporting) and 49,048 after Ian in 2022 (OIR Hurricane Ian data). Documented wind features are something a company can verify before the next storm, not after it.

Free inspections and smarter deductibles can stretch the benefit

The state's My Safe Florida Home program lists free wind mitigation inspections and grants for eligible homeowners, and you apply by creating an account on its site. Check the eligibility rules there before paying for an inspection yourself.

Credits are not the only lever. Florida requires insurers to offer hurricane deductibles of $500, 2%, 5% and 10% of the dwelling limit, and the hurricane deductible applies once per calendar year to all hurricane losses under policies from the same insurer or group (s. 627.701, Fla. Stat.). The deductible you pick and the credits on your form both shape the wind part of a quote, so we show each deductible choice with your credits applied, side by side, and you see the trade before you choose.

Keep your proof in one folder: the signed form, the photos the inspector took, and permits for any roof, window or shutter work from the City of Naples CityView permit search or the Collier County CityView portal.

One call puts your mitigation report in front of many companies

Every company files its own credits, so the same report can read differently from one insurer to the next. The only way to see which reading treats your house fairly is to put the report in front of many of them at once.

Call (239) 504-9998 and send the signed form with your declarations page. We are independent, representing many companies, with access to 80+ insurance companies, including A-rated companies. You explain the house once, and the offers come back side by side, often the same day. If a feature is missing from the form, we can point out what to ask your inspector about on a re-inspection. A quote does not cancel, replace or bind anything, so comparing changes nothing until you decide.

Questions about wind mitigation Naples owners ask

Is a wind mitigation inspection worth it in Naples?

It can be. Florida requires companies to file credits for documented wind features, and a company cannot apply a credit for something the form does not record. Homes with a newer roof, impact windows or shutters have the most to show. Check whether you qualify for a free inspection through My Safe Florida Home, then have the signed form compared across many companies.

How long is a wind mitigation inspection good for in Florida?

State law has regulators give guidance on how long results stay valid, and companies apply it in their own way. Citizens, for example, said it will keep accepting the previous version of the form if completed within five years before April 1, 2026 and no changes have been made to the structure. Inspections done on or after that date use the revised form. Ask each company quoting your home, or let us check.

What features does the Florida wind mitigation form look for?

The form records the building code the home was built under, roof covering, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall attachment, secondary water resistance and opening protection such as impact windows or shutters. The revised 2026 version also records roof slope, the region based on design wind speed and FORTIFIED Home certificates. A licensed inspector fills it in from what can be seen and documented.
